It's coming.....

                  
It's that time of year again... Cold and flu season. I like to affectionately call it ebola season, because the cold was a way bigger deal in the US last year then ebola was. (Funny side note... I dressed up as the ebola virus for Halloween last year! I might attach the photo at the bottom.) Not only are germs going to be passed around like the mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, but there are also some other things that come with cold and flu season. We also get those AWESOME public service announcements from CBS that not a single one of you listen to. I'm guilty of it too, I change the channel pretty fast.
 This cold and flu season is different. Now I have a baby... A baby who has already had RSV and croup in the less than 10 months of his life. I'm not one of those bubble parents, so I do take my kid out into the public. It REALLY bothers me when you all go to school/work when you are infected. I get it... Germs are EVERYWHERE. It's gross. With that being said, there are easy ways that we can all prevent the spread of germs.
               Here are Tater Mama's simple tips to surviving cold and flu season!

  1) DON'T BRING YOUR SICK SELF TO WORK. Seriously. If you are sick go the fuck home. I don't want your sickness, and neither does anyone else.
2) DON'T SEND YOUR SICK KID TO SCHOOL!!! This is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves. I get that keeping a kid home isn't always practical. It means someone has to stay home with them. I would rather miss a day of work, then have my kid potentially infect 600+ other children. It's selfish on your part. Keep them home.
3) Avoid places like Wal-Greens and CVS. I know that pharmacy trips make things easier when you just need some cold medicine, and Gatorade. We have to remember that they are pharmacies. All sorts of sick people go there to get help... They are filled with all sorts of gross sickness. So stock up on cold and flu essentials now. ** If you have to enter the cesspool I recommend picking out what you need as quickly as possible. I'm talking olympic runner fast. Avoid touching as many things as possible. The second you leave use hand sanitizer before even touching your car door handle.
4) Disinfect whatever you can, when you can. Once a week I disinfect all of Tater's small toys. As a baby he shoves everything into his carrot hole. Door knobs, car keys, counter tops, key boards, and the screen of your cell phone/ tablet are some of the dirtiest places! We touch our phones constantly! Ew!
5) Keep disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer on your person. That's self explanatory. I don't go insane with the wipes, but I do wipe things down like shopping carts, and public restrooms.
6) Practice good hygiene. I shouldn't have to explain that, so I'm not going to.
7) Take care of yourself! Make sure you are getting enough sleep and taking vitamins. Eating well also helps your body fight illness!

  There is always a chance that no matter how clean you are, you will still get sick! So just incase that happens, here is a recipe that will make being sick a little less miserable!
You will need:
4-5 Russet Potatoes Cubed into small pieces
7 strips of bacon
1 clove garlic
1 leak chopped
5 tablespoons butter
2.5 cups chicken stock
2 cups Milk (I use whole)
1/4 flour
1 cup cheddar cheese
salt, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, paprika.

  1. Cut up potatoes into small cubes. I prefer mine small because they cook faster. Then cut up two slices of bacon, garlic, and half of the leaks; toss into the bottom of a hot pot. Sprinkle some oil on to prevent the potatoes from sticking. Stir frequently. 
  2. After the bacon is a bit crispy add the butter into the center of the pan. once the butter is melted, pour the flour on top of the melted butter. Mix well, and let flour brown. Well that is browning, toss the remaining bacon into a frying pan, and fry until very crispy. Set aside bacon when done.
  3. Once the flour is browned, and bubbly... slowly whisk in chicken broth. Let simmer for 10-15 minutes until potatoes are soft. I usually add in some salt and pepper at this point too.
  4. Stir in milk and cheese. Cover and let simmer on low for 10-20 minutes. the soup should thicken nicely. Season to taste.
  5. Serve hot with crumbled bacon, cheese, and leaks on top! Goes great with a grilled cheese sandwich!


  I hope you all can manage to get out of this cold/flu season unharmed!
